SUV Redux: The Carlsson GL-based CK50

July 8, 2008

By Nate Martinez

With Mercedes-Benz's in-house performance division AMG currently only offering souped-up versions of the ML 550, German tuner Carlsson has given owners of the bigger Mercedes-Benz GL a chance to create their own autobahn bruiser with the addition of its CK50 package.

Available on all Mercedes-Benz models utilizing the 5.5-liter V-8 engine, the CK50 upgrade beneath the GL 550's hood produces 435 horsepower and 442 lb-ft of torque. Comparatively, a bone-stock model makes 388 horses and 391 lb-ft of torque. With the slight boost in power figures as a result of a new stainless steel exhaust and a re-flashed ECU, Carlsson states their GL hits 62 mph in only 6.1 seconds and can reach a top speed of 154 mph.

Quite noticeable is the lower stance embodied by the SUV. Like with their other models, Carlsson's engineers have developed their C-Tronic electronic lowering module to cut ride height by 35 mm (1.3 inches), further helping with the SUVs roadgoing abilities. Extra-large 22-inch diameter by 10-inch wide wheels, as well as a subtle revised front bumper add a few distinguishing notches in the styling department.

Carlsson is well known for their quality craftsmanship inside the passenger cabins of their builds and has developed an interior enhancement program for the GL 550. With a variety of woods, carbon fiber, and leather trimmings -- as well as the sporty Alcantara material -- the CK50 buyer has plenty of options for customization. Multimedia systems can also be ordered to finalize what is most likely one of the biggest, capable autobahn cruisers around -- just be sure to leave it in the visitor's lot when you get to the Nurburgring.

All custom Carlsson parts for the GL 550 and other Mercedes-Benz models are currently available at authorized dealers worldwide.
